Philosophy
Chiropractic philosophy is rather easy to comprehend. Simply put it, chiropractors believe that the body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. However, when there is spinal misalignment which decrease nerve functions (called subluxation), the body is unable to perform at optimal level. Visualize a garden hose that has been stepped on. The water pressure is not going to be as strong. The similar concept applies to your body. The doctors adjust the spine to remove interference. The big idea is not to treat sickness and disease, but to find the cause of the problem. If a breakdown occurs in the communication between the brain and body, then malfunction and disease is the result. When communication the brain the body is restored, then health is the inevitable result. It is the chiropractor's job to detect and correct areas of imbalance in the spine that cause nerve interference (subluxation) and help the patient regain his/her health naturally without the use of drugs and surgery. Remember, health comes from within.

Science
Chiropractic science deals with detection, correction, and prevention of vertebral subluxations. A subluxation is the condition of a vertebra that has lost its proper juxtaposition with the one above or the one below or both; to an extent less than luxation; which occludes an opening, impinges nerves and interferes with the transmission of mental impulses. Subluxations involve the spine, bony misalignment, and interference in the expression of the innate intelligence of the body over the nerve system. Subluxation, in basic, complex consists of five distinct parts:
1. Spinal Kinesiopathology – vertebra are jammed and either less mobile than they should or, too mobile.
2. Neuropathophysiology - nerves are impinged causing pain, tingling, numbness and/or pins and needles. Impulses traveling through the nerves are altered thereby blocking chemicals flow.
3. Histopathology - swelling, tenderness, "trigger" points, painful spots and other soft tissue changes. Cartilage, ligaments, discs, tendons and internal organs may be affected.
4. Pathophysiology - muscles, joints, ligaments and organs show signs of wear and tear and premature aging, fatigue, less resistance to disease and lack of physical and mental vitality.
5. Myopathology - muscles are chronically tight, in spasm, weak, overly sensitive and or sore.

Art
Many people “crack” their neck and back. The art in chiropractic is knowing WHEN and WHERE the patient needs to be adjusted. One can do a sloppy/general manipulate of the spine, but the primary cause is not corrected. To make assist in making such determination, static and motion palpation, thermographic scans, x-ray analysis, and muscle testing are some procedures employed. There are more forms of analysis that are specific to the techniques practiced. The administration of care to the patient is called an adjustment. This is the application of a dynamic force in a specific direction with the appropriate intention directed at the subluxation. Adjustments can be analogized with turning a light switch on in a dark room; it doesn't take very long, but the results can be the difference between darkness and light. Chiropractic art like Kung Fu takes practice. Your chiropractor is a doctor in the art of chiropractic as a master in Kung Fu with his black belt.
